Bellamy part of CMUs top recruiting class
DAVISON — If you ask Davison grad and soccer standout Abby Bellamy about signing with CMU, she’ll tell you she couldn’t have landed in a better place as part of the top recruiting class for 2007-08.
“The academics definitely was one of the biggest things, how strong a belief Tony (DiTucci) and the team has for academics. They have the highest GPA overall for Div. 1 in the nation, so that was a very big part of it.”
After considering the University of Toledo, Grand Valley State, U of D-Mercy, Ball State, Eastern and Western Michigan, Bellamy was sold on CMU.
“I’ve been out here a couple times this week to watch (the soccer day camp) because with NCAA rules, I can’t officially take part.”
Bellamy hopes for a spot on the team as an incoming freshman and hopes that comes with a lot of field time.
“Being from Davison, we’re excited to get another player that is a Michigan player,” DiTucci said. “Abby is a strong, fast defender. She has great height and great size, which helps her to do well in the air for balls. She’s especially dangerous going forward out of the back. She has great competitiveness, a lot of character and phenomenal work rate. She’s an outstanding student, so she makes for a great player for us.”
Bellamy has played since the age of three, including four years for the Vardar Soccer Club. She’s a four-year letter winner in soccer and basketball, was named First Team All-Big Nine in 2006 and 2007 and made All-Region and All-State honorable mention as a senior. She’s also a three-time Vardar Cup champ (2005-2007), Nike Classic Champ (2005, 2007), three-time State Cup quarterfinalist and has won three division titles in the Midwest Regional Premier League. — L.P.
