Safety weekend on tap for youth
DAVISON — A joint effort between the Law Enforcement Division of the Michigan DNR and the Burton Parks and Rec Department will offer the third annual Michigan Outdoor Recreational Safety Weekend July 19-20.

The event will take place at Williams Gunsight and Outfitters, 7389 Lapeer Rd. Youth attending the comprehensive weekend can earn safety certifications in hunter education, snowmobile and off-road vehicle and marine operation.

The free classes begin Saturday and Sunday at 7:45 a.m. with open registration for those who attended the mandatory June 25 first aid, survival and ethics session with their parents. All materials will be provided and no firearms, bows and arrows, knives or other equipment should be brought by attendees.

In class instruction and hands-on safety lessons will take place rain or shine.

“This is a great opportunity for young people interested in outdoor recreation to get four safety certifications over the course of one weekend,” said Sgt. Thomas Wanless, DNR conservation officer and event organizer. “MORS Weekend was created to educate students in the safety, ethics, responsibilities and laws in each program that is covered. Once students successfully complete these programs, they are issued their safety certificates allowing them to enjoy Michigan’s outdoors in a safe and knowledgeable manner.” — L.P.
