Fat Guy's Corner 005/08/2008

The running of the Kentucky Derby is over and Big Brown took home the roses. Big Brown, who drew the far outside post, was super-impressive in demolishing the rest of the field. I thought the outside post position would be a serious detriment in his run for the roses. Boy, was I wrong! I guess you could say Big Brown ran them all down.
Horse racing fans, this is one terrific race horse. I have to believe he has an awesome opportunity at winning the Triple Crown. The horse racing industry needs a horse to win the Triple Crown. Why? Horse racing has been in a steady decline for years and years. A possible Triple Crown winner should pique some interest from the casual horse racing fans and the media. I hope Big Brown can pull it off. I will go out on a limb (a big one) and say he will get it done.
The tragedy of the filly Eight Belles, who broke down at the end of the race, made me so sad. First of all, what happened was such a freak accident it’s almost unexplainable. Then throw in the fact of how nice of a horse she was and it makes you want to get sick to your stomach. Whenever you have to euthanize a horse it’s a sad day in the racing industry. I won’t get into the PETA organization controversy because it is ridiculous. I’m ready for the Preakness, and I want to see Big Brown in the winner’s circle.
Puck crazy
The Detroit Red Wings created their own avalanche last week and plowed under in four straight games were the Colorado Avalanche. Detroit dominated Colorado just as they did all regular season long. That is why I wanted the Wings to play the Avalanche. How about the 8-2 tail-whipping in game four? Impressive, I would say!
Thursday night Hockeytown will be Cup crazy as the Western Conference Finals will take center ice. The opponent will be the Dallas Stars. I absolutely love this matchup for the Wing Dings. Detroit has Marty Turco’s number. Marty might just suffer heat stroke as the Wings light the lamp.
Finally, during these playoffs the Wings’ offense is producing. Remember all the times Detroit would score one or two goals after leading the league in goals? Well, it looks like those days are in the past. The Red Wings are putting the puck in the net during the first eight games of the playoffs. If they keep doing it offensively, the Cup will be back in the Motor City; which is where it belongs, I might add.
I’m so happy for Chris Osgood between the pipes. Ozzie has been given the chance to bring home a championship and he has delivered so far. I know he has eight more games to win yet, but I love how he has responded in the nets. He looks confident, and when Ozzie has confidence the puck stays out of the net. Dallas has no shot in this series against the red and white. Dallas defeating San Jose was a mild upset; they won’t pull off two upsets in a row. Sorry about that Mike Modano! Detroit is skating, scoring and playing defense. I look for Detroit in a six-game series. Stanley Cup, here we come.
Wake up call
Thank you, Philadelphia 76ers, for waking up the Pistons. The Pistons have opened up a 2-0 lead on the Orlando Magic. A controversial three-pointer at the end of the third quarter helped seal game two. Yes, a call in the third quarter can affect the outcome of a basketball game. The three by Chauncey was a huge call and a huge blunder by the officials and it played into the final score of the basketball game. How can the NBA not let their own officials use replay for a clock malfunction? I know it went the Pistons’ way, but I didn’t like it. Pistons over the Magic in five!
