DAVISON — After a previous week of close soccer contests against Fenton, Flushing and Carman-Ainsworth, the Cardinals’ offense shut down against first-place Flint Powers and failed to restart again in its next following against second place Grand Blanc.
The top two Big Nine teams never allowed Davison to put a point on the board, as the Lady Cards were shut out 8-0 at Powers and 6-0 at home against Grand Blanc.
The Cardinals allowed five first-half goals against the Bobcats Monday night en route to the shutout. Grand Blanc’s Kristen Steffes, Rachel Lawrence, Tayler Ward, Alyssa Wombwell and Alex Lord all contributed goals for the Cats. Wombwell led Bobcat scoring with two goals on the night and keeper Morgan Waier faced two shots to record her sixth shutout of the season.
Steffes led off the scoring for Grand Blanc, knocking in a volley from a cross by Wombwell. Lawrence’s goal followed, with an assist by Jenna Fraser, then Lord assisted on Ward’s score. Wombwell netted her first goal of the game on an assist by Rachel McCollum. McCollum later notched her second assist of the game on Lord’s goal to follow. Wombwell scored her second and lone goal of the second half on a long volley fired from 20 yards out, with Alex Lord and Tayler Ward awarded assists.
The Cards faced another grim outcome at Flint Powers last Thursday as the Chargers’ Kate Howragh netted three goals en route to the 8-0 shutout. Blake Jule, Meghan Scheving, Allison Seville, Mackenzie Mora and Jessica Genord each contributed their own goals for Flint Powers. Charger goalkeeper Hannah Quranata made six saves to pick up the shutout for her team, improving Powers to 13-3-0 overall, 5-2 Big Nine.
The week in which the Cardinals were outscored by a combined score of 14-0 saw its Big Nine record fall to 2-6-1, placing them in fifth in the conference, just above the winless Carman-Ainsworth squad. Davison will try and re-group from the rough week to rebound for its final Big Nine regular season game against Kearsley at home today.
