DAVISON — The Cardinals’ pitching staff has been getting its turn on the mound, however, because it was a Big Nine match-up against Grand Blanc Monday, Timm Rye put in his big gun, Trevor Cousineau. The southpaw pitched a three-hitter that featured 11 strikeouts in the 7-1 opening game of the twinbill.
Jared Cowan was 2-3 with two RBI and a solo home run. Nick Creason and Cousineau each had one hit and two RBI and Kaleb Forr connected on a three-run homer. Kevin Yoesting and Mike Dolloff each had one hit.
In game two, Tad Dipzinski went the distance giving up four runs, two earned. Cowan had two hits and drove in three runs, Dipzinski had two hits and three RBI, and Yoesting and Cousineau each singled.
Grand Blanc’s Ty Spickler took the loss for the Bobcats that just could not lock down the Cards. Grand Blanc coach JD Wheeler said the score did not show the true outcome of the game, which was actually much closer. Wheeler did note that his defense did not back up Spickler’s throwing from the mound, adding to the loss.
“When you face a good team like Davison, you have to lock them down quick, and we didn’t get it done on the defense. That will always come back to bite you.”
“It was a battle of two unbeatens,” said Davison coach Timm Rye. “We’ve had a real good run against Big Nine rivals and with Powers and Kearsley coming up on the schedule, we hope to keep it going.”
Davison faces Grand Blanc again Friday in a rematch at the Greater Flint tournament at 7:30 p.m. Grand Blanc is now 13-5 overall, 3-2 Big Nine. Davison could see Grand Blanc six times in total this year if the teams draw each other come district time. The Cards are 5-0 Big Nine, 10-5 overall.
Last Friday, Davison mercied Linden in a 15-0 shutout in three innings in round one of the Greater Flint tournament. Dolloff pitched all three innings, facing 10 batters. Yoesting had two hits and one RBI, as did Creason. Cousineau drove in two runs, Tony Mickus had one hit and two RBI, and Dipzinski singled and had three RBI. Bob Sanchez chipped in with a single and an RBI, and Dolloff singled and drove in one run.
Last Thursday, Davison shut out Flint Kearsley, 10-0, in a five-inning mercy-ruled win. Chad Hoover went the distance, allowing four hits while fanning eight. Creason had two hits and three RBI, Cousineau had two hits and a two-run home run and Dipzinski had two hits. Cowan singled and drove in one run, Yoesting and Hoover each had two RBI, and Forr drove in one run.
Game two was a 15-1 rout in six innings. Chad Horton got the win after tossing a three-hitter, and Tyler Kostelic struck out two of the final three hitters.
