Cardinals host annual clinic
DAVISON — An enthusiastic crowd of young boys brought their baseball mitts, caps and willingness to learn as they lined up to test their young arms and legs under the guidance of the Davison varsity baseball team and coaches May 3.
Varsity coach Timm Rye and the varsity team donned full uniforms and set forth to teach their young charges the proper skills and techniques of hitting, fielding, base running and mental aspects of the game at the annual Davison Youth Baseball mini-camp.
Each participant got a camp T-shirt and much more as they threw, bunted, and ran their hearts out as their high school mentors offered pointers and tips.
Open to boys ages 5-16, the clinic broke the game down by teaching students all facets of baseball using a series of stations on the varsity baseball field. Batting tees, backstop nets and on-field, one-one-one, as well as small-group drills, gave the kids a hands-on lesson that they will remember for some time.
After all the hard work, the boys were treated to lunch and an autograph session where varsity coaches and players signed T-shirts, balls and caps.
Rye noted that the team really enjoys interacting with the younger boys, since they, too, walked in those small shoes before their varsity playing time.
Proceeds from the day go toward the Davison baseball programs. — L.P.
