Local man killed in Afghanistan

DAVISON — Davison native Navy Petty Officer Ross Laval Toles III, 37, died June 18 in the northern Paktika province of Afghanistan from wounds he suffered in rocket attack.
Toles joined the Navy in September 1989. He reported to Mobilization Accounting Operations in Afghanistan on Feb. 26. Toles held the rank of Construction Mechanic First Class Petty Officer-CM1.
During his service, he received numerous awards and decorations, including two Joint Meritorious Unit Awards; a Navy ‘E’ ribbon; two Navy Reserve Meritorious Service medals; two National Defense Service medals; a Humanitarian Service medal; and three Sea Service Deployment ribbons.
A funeral service is 11 a.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 90 Millville Rd., in Lapeer.
