DAVISON — Helping Unemployed People (HUP) Access Point, 450 N. Dayton St., is open three days a week to help unemployed residents seek employment.

The organization, chaired by Marji Theodoroff, Bernie and Rosie Throll and Sue Flewelling, has been in operation since February 2007. They’re assisted by 20 area volunteers. Since opening, they’ve serviced more than 200 unemployed people in the Davison and Genesee County area.

Theodoroff said the program is sponsored by St. John’s Catholic Church, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, Davison Free Methodist and St. Francis of Assisi in Otisville. While it’s sponsored by area churches, the service is open to everyone in Genesee County “We want people to know that we’re here. We’re an access point for the unemployed,” she said.

“HUP provides free internet service where job seekers can go in and search for jobs listed in the Michigan Talent Bank. They assist with resume preparation and, if needed, direct referrals for human services. “We have four computers and divided cubicles for privacy. We offer a friendly and positive environment,” Theodoroff said.

HUP also will help set up e-mail accounts to electronically apply for job positions. “People can come in and check their e-mails whenever they want without a time limit,” she said.

Along with assisting those without jobs, HUP also will help local employers list their open job positions. HUP is a non-profit organization. “We’re always looking for cash donations or office equipment,” she said. They’re also looking for more volunteers. “All they need are basic computer skills,” she said.

HUP is open from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday; 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday and 1-4 p.m. Wednesday.
