FIA introduces new selections for May film series

FLINT — The Flint Institute of Arts (FIA) presents its May film series, airing throughout the month in the FIA Theatre.

Selections for the series are films considered to be noteworthy international, independent and classical films. Films are shown at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.

The film for the weekend of May 16-18 is Close to Home, a 2006 Israeli film about the lives of two outwardly differing female soldiers in the Israeli border patrol and their struggle growing up female in a war-torn area. The film is 98 minutes long with subtitles and is not rated.

For May 23-25, a 2007 French film, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, is featured. The film is an Oscar-nominated drama based on the true story of a journalist who becomes entirely paralyzed, except for his left eye, and focuses on his attempts to communicate with the world. The film is 112 minutes and rated PG-13.

Finally, for the weekend of May 30-June 1, the featured film is Network, an American piece selected by guest programmer and Flint Journal columnist Andrew Heller. The film won several Oscars for its screenwriters and actors. Heller will talk about the film prior to the Friday and Sat-urday showings. The film is 121 minutes long and rated R.

Also available in the Fleckenstein Video Gallery until June 1 is the short film Nebula. The film is 10 minutes long and pays homage to science fiction through stop-motion photography.

Tickets for the film series showing are $6 for general admission, $5 for FIA members, and $4 for Friends of Modern Arts members. Museum hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Sat-urday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
